Confidentiality of Records

We are required by state law and ethical counseling principles to maintain written records of services provided to students, faculty, and staff. While keeping records of our interactions with our clients helps us provide high-quality services, we are committed to safeguarding the confidentiality of these records.  

When you call or visit the Counseling Center, you can be assured of the following:
  • Records are highly secured
  • Records are accessible only by counselors
  • Parents (unless the student is under 18), police, administrators, faculty, coaches, secretarial staff, and student workers do not have access to your records without your written consent. 
  • Client records are not part of your academic record
  • Records are not made known to prospective employers or graduate schools
  • Only under rare circumstances would we be required to release information about a client without their permission in order to conform to state law and fulfill our duty to protect the client and/or others. The most likely situations include:
    • The client is deemed a danger to themselves or others
    • Records must be released by court order
    • A minor’s safety is threatened by abuse/neglect from an adult
